How Dubai became an education hub

Thu 8 October 2020

Together with the government’s ongoing efforts to foster innovation and become a model for future smart cities, Dubai is also emerging as an international knowledge hub.

Together with the government’s ongoing efforts to foster innovation and become a model for future smart cities, Dubai is also emerging as an international knowledge hub.

International institutions

Businesses and individuals can take advantage of a wide range of universities, educational institutions and research centres including respected international bodies.

The University of Wollongong in Dubai represents one of the leading universities and offers accreditation from both the UAE and Australia as well as a number of international organisations.

The Canadian University of Dubai has networked with top engineering centres in Canada and works on research projects with leading institutions from its home country.

The Rochester Institute of Technology, listed in Peterson’s Competitive Colleges, offers some of the world’s best courses in science, technology and engineering which are identical to those issued on its main US campus.

The School of Engineering, Applied Sciences and Technology in Dubai offers specialised engineering and science degree programmes across a variety of degrees.

These are but a few of the offerings available to businesses and individuals in Dubai.

Knowledge and training resources

Dubai’s thriving markets provide access to innovative centres of knowledge across countless sectors.

Dubai Knowledge Park hosts a selection of programmes on Human Resource Management. The courses on HR management, consultancy, training and personal development aim to bolster Dubai’s talent pool through ongoing learning. The Park’s team works to set up training centres, institutes and HR agencies to ensure a vibrant training environment.

A practical way of providing support and knowledge to a sector is to form an association and the Dubai Association Centre was founded to do just that. The centre assists in the creation of non-profit, apolitical and non-religious professional associations and trade bodies in Dubai and works with associations from across the region.

Research, development and innovation

Dubai sits at the forefront of global research and development (R&D) across a number of fields and also works to support innovation in existing and emerging sectors. These efforts will help ensure Dubai remains a global innovative leader and also provide businesses with access to cutting edge knowledge and information.

The Dubai Future District will see Dubai World Trade Centre, DWTC, Emirates Towers and Dubai International Financial Centre, DIFC, directly connected via a bridge, making it the Middle East's largest district dedicated to developing the new economy.

A US$272 billion drive was also launched to support new economy companies who will operate out of Dubai Future District. It’s hoped these entities will shape Dubai's new economy and contribute to enhancing the emirate's position as a preferred destination for global talent and entrepreneurs. This will be achieved through many initiatives and projects aimed at turning Dubai into a nexus for business and an integrated investment environment that offers exceptional facilities.

The District, along with the new fund, will provide unprecedented financing and legislative facilities and options for businesses.

Quality and excellence in healthcare

Dubai Healthcare City is committed to becoming internationally recognised as a destination for quality healthcare and an integrated centre of excellence for clinical and wellness services, as well as medical education and research. The Mohammed Bin Rashid Medical University of Medicine and Health Sciences – a hub for healthcare education and knowledge – was established to support healthcare education, research and clinical practice with the aim of becoming a leading medical and health sciences university.

Other globally-recognised facilities based in the emirate include the Dubai Harvard Foundation for Medical Research, as well as Al Jalila Foundation, a global philanthropic organisation dedicated to transforming lives through medical education and research.

Founded by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Dubai in April 2013, the foundation invests in the UAE’s medical treatment capabilities and provides scholarships to support ground-breaking research that addresses health challenges prevalent in the region.

Support across industries

In the field of technology and connectivity, the Dubai Internet City free zone provides a platform for the businesses of tomorrow. The free zone’s Innovation Hub provides 1.6 million square feet of workspace, catering to start-ups, SMEs and multinationals.

in5 is an incubator inside the Innovation Hub and is dedicated to finding and nurturing ideas that will shape the future of ICT, digital media, mobility, the Internet of Things (IoT) and smart cities.

Dubai Science Park serves the entire value chain of the science sector, and is dedicated to supporting scientific entrepreneurs, SMEs and multinational enterprises. The free zone offers office and laboratory space, and a robust infrastructure, and ensures a supportive ecosystem that allows businesses to flourish.

The Dubai Creative Clusters Authority (DCCA) supports creative industries in Dubai and encourages innovative companies to set up and settle in the emirate. The Creative Community housed in Dubai Design District encourages creativity and innovation and serves as an incubator in the art and design sector.

A wealth of knowledge

Dubai is a city built according to a vision. That vision has delivered unmatched success over the past half century, and Dubai has a plan for tomorrow, for the next year, for the next decade and beyond. This is just one of the reasons the ‘Dubai model’ has become a byword for successful, sustainable growth.
